PRESS RELEASE

May 03, 2004

On Monday May 3, 2004 at approximately 8:00 AM, New Ipswich police officer Richard Belanger was on routine patrol on Turnpike Road near the windblown ski area when he observed a white Honda accord traveling in excess of the posted speed limit. Officer Belanger activated his emergency lights and attempted to stop the vehicle, however the vehicle increased it speed and refused to stop, resulting in a vehicular pursuit towards the Town, of Jaffrey.

The vehicle dangerously passed several vehicles in a no passing zone, and also passed a group of three vehicles in the Town of Sharon on a sharp corner with on-coming traffic. The Jaffrey Police Department was contacted via radio and set up with the tire deflation device near the Jaffrey airport entrance. At the intersection of Route 124 and Prescott Road in Jaffrey, the vehicle encountered heavy traffic and the operator passed two more vehicles on a solid line before electing to pull over.

Cale Sikkila, 17, of New Ipswich was subsequently arrested for Reckless Driving, Disobeying An Officer, Resisting Arrest and Speeding. Sikkila was processed and released on Personal Recognizance bail until his June 8, 2004 arraignment.

The New Ipswich Police Department would like to thank the Jaffrey Police Department for their assistance in bringing this extremely dangerous situation to a safe and successful conclusion.
