PRESS RELEASE
New Ipswich Police Detain Illegal Aliens
On Monday July 12, 2004, at approximately 3:20 PM, Chief Garrett Chamberlain and Officer Richard
Belanger were conducting radar enforcement on Turnpike Road in front of the Central School. Officer
Belanger observed a black Chevrolet van traveling eastbound on Turnpike Road in excess of the posted
speed limit. The vehicle was pulled over and it was determined that the van was traveling from
Marlborough, New Hampshire to Milford, Massachusetts. Further investigation revealed that the van was
carrying ten passengers. Nine of the passengers were determined to be Illegal Aliens who have been in
the United States varying lengths of time ranging from two months to four years. The driver, who was
identified as Juan Tacuri, age 23 of Milford, Massachusetts, was determined to be unlicensed and the
vehicle’s registration had been suspended by the State of Massachusetts.
Due to a language barrier, Corporal Geha of the Lyndeborough Police Department was summoned to converse
with the Spanish-speaking individuals. Geha was able to determine that the subjects were from Ecuador
and that they had entered the United States through Mexico into California by paying an average of
$10,000 to a subject who smuggled them across the border.
The United States Immigration Office in Manchester, NH was contacted and it was determined that the
office would not send an agent to take custody of the Illegal Aliens. A second call was placed to the
Hartford CT. Office and the New Ipswich Police Department was informed that there were no criminal acts
to warrant the Illegal Aliens being taken into custody. After obtaining the names of all of the Illegal
Aliens and taking photographs, they were released.
