Microchip scanner

Thanks to a very generous donation from a local resident, the New Ipswich Police Department now has a scanner to read microchips in pets. When you register your dog with the town, you can have them write down your dog's microchip number and we will be able to return him to you quickly. If you have other kinds of pets who have been microchipped, please let us know and we will make a note of it for our records.

A microchip is a relatively inexpensive procedure that can be performed by most vets, which includes a lifetime registration with a national database. For more information, you should contact your veterinarian and ask them about the process.

Microchips have been responsible for reuniting over 100,000 lost pets with their owners. Your pet's tags can fall off and their collar can break, but the microchip cannot be lost. This Department has had to bring a large number of pets to the Humane Society because they could not find their owners.

While pet owners are required to have their dog under their control at all times, we understand that accidents happen and dogs do get loose, (the Animal Control Officer's very busy schedule is proof of that), and this gives us one more way to return your pet to you.
